Career Connections

Fairmont Holiday Inn

The Youth Works participants from the Fairmont/Clarksburg/Morgantown area had an event held at the

Fairmont Holiday Inn. Everyone participated in a discussion with Karen, the WVUCED Benefits Counselor, in regards to work incentives and reporting earned income to SSA. Participants played Career Bingo and also took part in an activity regarding job interviewing skills. After the presentations, everyone got to enjoy a poolside

dinner and some swimming. Participants all received bags with various donated items and door prizes for participating in Career Bingo.

The first round of Career Connections events have been held in all WV Youth Works regions. The events were a huge success and everyone is looking forward to the upcoming second round of activities!

On November 25, 2008 participants took part in a worksite tour and job shadowing activity at the Clarksburg Police Department. The participants involved got the opportunity to take a tour of the various facilities and departments, including; the City Council Chambers, City Managers' office, Booking, Fingerprinting, Police Records, and the Squadroom.

 This year, West Virginia Youth Works had the opportunity to participate in a job shadow day that was part of a national initiative. We hope to plan many more opportunities like this one in the future. A group of participants visited Teletech, in Morgantown, WV, and was given a tour and orientation by Whitney Nine, Teletech Talent Acquisition Manager.

 Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) is a national program that promotes career development for students and job-seekers with disabilities through job shadowing and hands-on career exploration. This year, WV Youth Works partnered with the Fairmont Holiday Inn to provide a day of learning and activities surrounding the various elements of working in a hotel setting.
